The 2022 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina from La Ca’ Nova is widely considered the “insider’s choice” for Nebbiolo purists. While its sibling, Montestefano, is known for raw power, the Montefico is celebrated for its ethereal aromatics, vertical structure, and profound minerality. Produced by the Rocca family in the heart of the Bric Mentina sub-plot, this 2022 vintage offers a level of precision and “Burgundian” finesse that rivals the most famous names in Piedmont.
Aroma: Highly aromatic and “high-toned.” It opens with notes of wild red berries, pomegranate, and orange zest, followed by a sophisticated floral bouquet of crushed violets and dried roses. A distinct signature of cool menthol, licorice, and wet stones (graphite) emerges as it breathes.
Palate: Precise, vibrant, and laser-focused. This is a “vertical” wine—characterized by an electric acidity and a saline, mineral core. The tannins are firmed and “chalky,” providing a structural skeleton that is firm yet silky.
Finish: Exceptionally long and savory, leaving a lingering impression of spice, white pepper, and iron-like minerality.
