The Sangiovese grape is king in Tuscany and, in the best locations with the best wine producers, it produces a sublime wine that is second to none in the global hierarchy. Sangiovese performs particularly well in its native terroirs and microclimates and, unlike other famous noble grapes of the Old World, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it has rarely done well outside the home. Tuscany is also the homeland of Sassicaia and obviously of the Super Tuscans.
